Psalm 46

1.  Genesis 1:26 – 28

            – Man is created in the image and likeness of God

2.  Genesis 2:4 – 25

            – Genesis 1 – God revealed as transcendent.  Genesis 2 – God revealed as immanent

            – Man is the gardener in Eden – the garden-sanctuary

            – The world is to be the garden-sanctuary of God

            – Genesis 2:15 – 16 – “work and keep,” “serve (tend) and guard.”  Later, these two verbs are used together concerning the work undertaken by the Priests and               Levites who serve the Tabernacle (Numbers 3:7 – 8; 18:7).  Adam and Eve had a priestly role that they forfeited.

3.  Genesis 3:8 – 13; 17 – 24

            – Man is sent out of the garden-sanctuary and enters a wasteland

4.  Luke 22:39 – 46

            – Jesus enters a garden (John’s Gospel)

            – Gethsemane – means “olive (oil) press”

            – There is nothing in the cup that Jesus is to drink that He desires.  He is absolutely repulsed by the cup – yet He must surrender to God’s will and drink                            it fully.

5.  John 20:1 – 18

            – Jesus is the “new man,” the “second Adam.”  He is the Gardener.  God’s plan can never fail in Christ’s hands.
